A self-guided walk around the square
A flexible route, without a timed ticket
Start in the open square and look across the travertine paving before approaching the façades. Walk along the porticoes, keeping shop entrances and pedestrian routes clear. This is a suggested outdoor circuit, not a measured accessible route or a promise that every passage is open.
Three stops to notice
Look at Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo and its civic presence, then the Gothic forms of San Francesco and the adjacent Loggia dei Mercanti. Finish at the façade of Caffè Meletti. Compare the different architectural details instead of treating every building as Renaissance. Entering a café means checking its current service and prices.
Continue or pause
Use the square as a pause in a longer walk through Ascoli. Italia.it includes Piazza del Popolo in its Ascoli itinerary. Choose any further stops according to your time and mobility; a short look at the square can stand alone. Wet stone may be slippery, and an event or works can change your route.
